MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 04/01/12 -- As the Easter weekend approaches, almost 60% of homeowners will be getting ready to make some much needed home improvements, according to a survey by Swinton Insurance.

Swinton - a leading high street retailer of cheap house insurance - carried out an online survey of their customers, quizzing them about their DIY plans for the upcoming Easter break.

Out of those surveyed, 59.5 per cent admitted to scheduling their DIY for the bank holiday, with a staggering 82.8 per cent confessing they planned to spend up to GBP 250 on their home hobby.

According to findings by Swinton, the recession coupled with the current UK housing crisis has led to many homeowners carrying out renovations themselves, as they cannot afford to relocate or hire professional assistance.

Interestingly, although the survey revealed that 53.9 per cent of homeowners would rather tackle the job themselves, 40.8 per cent said that they would be most likely to ask Dad for help with the DIY; while 22.8 per cent of those who had attempted it themselves had ended up causing damage.

Swinton Insurance is advising homeowners to check their house insurance policies before making any home repairs, to make sure they are covered for any accidental damage should the worst happen.

Swinton is offering the following advice to property owners looking to carry out home repairs during the Easter break:

-- Make sure you are equipped with the correct tools in order to carry out the work -- Plan projects far in advance so that you are prepared for any eventuality -- Hire a professional to carry out maintenance if you are not confident enough to do so yourself -- Wear appropriate clothing and protective equipment, where necessary

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton, said: "Although the idea of carrying out home maintenance yourself can seem appealing, we would advise all homeowners to review their home insurance policies before doing so, to make sure they are covered for all eventualities. Additionally, we would advise people to seek professional assistance wherever possible, to avoid any unnecessary mishaps."
