Home insurance discounts threatened with new inspections - WEAR

Thousands of Florida home owners are seeing their insurance discounts vanish. Insurance companies are re-inspecting homes to see if customers deserve the yearly discounts they receive for home improvements.

The state requires insurance companies to slash prices for people who strengthen their windows, doors and roofs. This year, for example, the state run Citizens Property Insurance has re-inspected 150,000 homes.

Six out of ten have lost at least part of their discount.

Citizens will complete more than 300,000 inspections before the end of the year. Those are for customers receiving $1,000 or more in mitigation discounts.

Private insurers are reinspecting at random. All the inspections are being paid for by the insurance companies.Home insurance discounts threatened with new inspections
