FOLEY, Ala. (WALA) - Governor Robert Bentley told lawmakers, members of the insurance community and homeowners, Wednesday was a "great day" in insurance reform.

"This is a real problem we have, and that's why we got these bills through. Now, will it solve all the problems? Not all of them; but it's a step in the right direction," Bentley said.

The legislature passed several bills dealing with homeowners insurance including one that gives tax credits to insurance companies that write policies in certain areas of Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Bentley said it's time to be fair.

"If you write insurance in Alabama, they have to include everyone in Alabama. It's not fair to people in Baldwin and Mobile that they would drop them," said Bentley.

State Senator Ben Brooks said he agrees, and some companies didn't like the idea.

"Some companies came to the table voluntarily. Some had to be brought to the table. And you may remember, we had a filibuster for three days to bring some to the table. I foresee this continuing," Brooks said.

Brooks said every step is a fight.

Bentley said his next step is getting recommendations from the insurance commission and trying to get money from the restore act from BP that he believes would help get some of the insurance companies back to writing policies.
